We recently completed a specialist roof safety project at a residential property in London, delivering a fully compliant freestanding edge protection system with a contract value of £15,000.

The scope of works involved the installation of a new freestanding handrail system to the roof perimeter, designed to improve safety for maintenance access while preserving the integrity of the existing roof structure.

Due to the nature of the building, safe access was achieved using a ladder system, allowing our team to carry out the installation efficiently and securely.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

For this project, we installed a DEFENDER Roof Edge Protection system, specifically selected for its non-penetrative design. This freestanding solution requires no drilling or mechanical fixings, ensuring that the roof membrane remains completely intact and eliminating the need for any subsequent repair works.

The system is ideally suited for flat roofs with up to a 3° pitch and was configured to meet the relevant safety standards, including BS EN ISO 14122-3 and BS EN 13374 Class A load and deflection requirements.

SCOPE & MATERIALS

Operating on a counterbalance principle, the system uses durable curved PVC counterweights to provide stability. Each upright is supported by a galvanised malleable iron foot with a protective rubber base, preventing damage to the roof surface. An integrated toe board feature was also included, which is essential where there is no existing perimeter upstand.

Installation efficiency was maximised through the use of 1100mm high factory pre-assembled uprights. These feature open cradle fittings, allowing the handrail tubes to be quickly dropped into place rather than threaded through multiple connections. This significantly reduced installation time, improved safety during assembly, and delivered cost savings to the client

RESULT

As a result of the installation, staff can now access the roof safely and with confidence for routine inspections and maintenance. The system provides continuous edge protection, significantly reducing the risk of falls while ensuring full compliance with current safety regulations.
